During your ascent towards Kenya’s highest peak (5,199 m / 17,058 ft), you’ll enjoy fine walking and an ever-changing and spectacular scenery. The trail leads you through moorland, along rivers and, on the last stretch towards Point Lenana, a steep rocky trail. However, once you’ve reached this point at 4,985 metres above sea level, you just have to enjoy: the sun rising above the mountain range and land in front of you, the view of the two main peaks Nelion and Batian and, on a clear day, even Mount Kilimanjaro. Your descent from this ancient volcano is just as thrilling as your ascent, since it takes you through the lush rainforest
As you step out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a member of our Kiwoito Africa Safaris team or a hotel driver greets you with a big smile: ‘Karibu Kenya – welcome to Kenya!’ He brings you straight to your hotel to relax and, along the way, you get your first impressions of vibrant Nairobi. The next day, your guide takes you on an exclusive, private safari that allows you to travel at your own pace. Let your 5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing adventure begin!
Accommodation: Boma Inn Nairobi
Meal Plan: Dinner
Day one starts with a 3 to 4 hour drive from Nairobi to Sirimon Gate at 2,640 meters. You arrive, take lunch, then begin the climb. The trail moves through tropical rainforest with wide views. Trees thin out as you enter open heathland. After 3 to 4 hours on foot, you reach Old Moses Camp at 3,300 meters. You eat dinner and spend the night in the camp huts.
After a hearty breakfast, you start your second day of climbing from Old Moses Camp (3,300m). In seven hours, you cross the Ontulili River, a stretch of moorland, and the Liki North Camp, then you go uphill into MacKinders Valley for some panoramic views of the main peaks of Mount Kenya. In the afternoon you arrive at Shiptons Camp, in time for dinner and an overnight in one of the huts. This camp at 4,200 meters is the perfect place for your day of acclimatization on day 3.
Today focuses on acclimatization at 4,200 meters to lower the risk of altitude sickness and improve your summit success. After breakfast, you take a short hike to help your body adapt to the altitude and weather. You return to camp in time for lunch. The afternoon stays free for rest and recovery. Get proper rest, since tomorrow is summit day.
Today is the day you conquer the mountain! At 3 o’clock in the morning, you start your attempt to reach the summit. A steep rocky trail takes you up, and around 6:30 AM you are on Lenana Peak – just in time to watch the sunrise at 4,985 meters above sea level…! Enjoy the amazing views, which on clear days even include Mount Kilimanjaro more than 350 kilometres away. You then hike two hours back to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast, and another four to Old Moses Camp (3,300 m) to spend the night.
After breakfast, you descend through the rainforest toward the lower slopes. In about three hours, you reach Sirimon Gate and exit Mount Kenya National Park. Your driver transfers you to Nanyuki for lunch, then continues to Nairobi based on your route plan. You arrive in the late afternoon. Relax at your hotel and enjoy the sense of achievement. This marks the end of your five day Mount Kenya climb.
