Mount Meru (4,566 m) is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and an excellent acclimatization climb before attempting Kilimanjaro or a rewarding standalone adventure. This 4-day trek follows the classic Momella Route in Arusha National Park, offering diverse landscapes, from lush rainforest to moorland and alpine zones, along with close wildlife encounters (giraffes, buffalo, monkeys, warthogs, and possibly elephants), stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, and the dramatic crater rim with its ash cone and jagged summit. The route is steep in places but provides a challenging yet achievable summit experience with fewer crowds than Kilimanjaro.
With our experienced, certified guides (armed ranger required in the park), professional porters, and a focus on safety and enjoyment, the trek includes all park fees, rescue fees, hut accommodations, nutritious meals, private transfers, and safety gear. This route is perfect for trekkers who are looking for a challenging climb that offers stunning scenery and abundant wildlife.

Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) – Arusha (1400 m)
Duration: 4 – 5 Hours
Meal Plan: Breakfast & Lunch
On the first day of your 4-day Mount Meru trekking trip, you will be picked up from your hotel in Arusha (1400 m) and taken to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park after an early breakfast. Porters will prepare and pack your belongings for the hike, while you and your guide register with Tanzania National Park (TANAPA). You will then start your ascent in Arusha National Park. The first day of hiking is similar to a walking safari; you can expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and possibly elephants along the trail. Because of the high likelihood of encountering wildlife, an armed ranger hired through the National Park is required to accompany our team for the duration of the hike. As you continue hiking, you will come across the Ngarenanyuki River and a stunning waterfall at the foot of Mount Meru. When you arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2500 m), your chef will prepare a hot dinner and wash water for you. Enjoy the beautiful sunset, and overnight

Meru is an excellent standalone trek or perfect acclimatization climb before Kilimanjaro. It offers diverse scenery, wildlife encounters, and fewer crowds, with a challenging but achievable summit in just 4 days.
The best months are January–March and June–October, when the weather is usually clearer and trails are drier, making the climb more comfortable and increasing summit success. April–May is the main rainy season, which can make trails muddy and the adventure more challenging. November–December has lighter rains, but many climbers still enjoy the experience with fewer crowds and beautiful scenery.
