Lake Jipe is an inter-territorial lake straddling the borders of Kenya and Tanzania. On the Kenyan side, it is located south of the village of Nghonji, while on the Tanzanian side, it is situated within the Mwanga District in the Kilimanjaro Region. Tsavo West National Park protects part of the lake’s northern shore, while on the Tanzanian side, Mkomazi Game Reserve is nearby. The lake is known for fish, water birds, mammals like hippopotamus, wetland plants, and lake-edge swamps.
Lake Jipe Day Tour Itinerary
Pickup up in the morning from Arusha or Moshi and drive to Lake Jipe, stunning views of the Usambara mountains as well as local and fisherman villages are seen en route to the lake.
We will start walking from the lake shore passing through tall lake reeds to a boat or canoe ride in the lake and depending on the season sometimes it’s difficult to reach the lake due to heavy reeds. You will spend a few hours on the lake looking for water birds, hippos or crocodiles, and sometimes Elephants coming from Tsavo West National Park.
Sometimes you can fish Tilapia for your lunch and can as well combine Lake Jipe with an off-the-beaten-track hike near the waterfall in the Pare Mountains.
