Nairobi National Park is not only Kenya’s oldest national park but also happens to be the only national park within a capital city in the world making it a very unique offering. Only 10 kilometers from the city center, with long, sloping plains of black cotton soil scoured by deep river valleys and gorges, this park is full of unexpected beauty and diverse habitats which include rolling grassy plains, riverine woodland, dense thickets rocky gorges dry upland forest, man-made dams and pools cocktail with teeming wildlife and over 400 species of birds. This versatile park also hosts its wildebeest migration and is the only place on earth where you can find the black and white rhinos grazing against the silhouettes of skyscrapers.

The park is an ideal day trip destination or a green escape from the city offering a selection of picnic and bush event sites which include:

Impala observation point;-high on a hill just minutes from the main gate, this site offers a stone-built rondavel with panoramic views a picnic area, and latrines

The ivory burning site;- famous as the place where 12 tones of ivory were burnt by the second president of Kenya in 1989 to show Kenya’s commitment to conservation and emphasis on zero trade in ivory. The site offers a spacious and convenient venue for picnics and bush functions.

Kingfisher picnic site; a green shaded area with picnic tables ideal for early morning bush breakfast.

Mokoyiet picnic site;- an open cliff top site with shaded tables, latrines, and extensive parking close by the leopard cliff observation point looking down into the Mbagathi river below

Restaurant

The clubhouse restaurant is located only 1km from the main park entrance, the facility offers a serene and quiet environment to unwind after a game drive with meals and drinks at reasonable prices. The grounds can also be hired for cooperative and social functions with a capacity of 350 persons.

Camping

A camper will find a serene environment with modern facilities including hot water showers and electricity. One can hire the tents from the gate and an open kitchen area is also available.

Transport

You don’t have to own a vehicle to visit the park there is a bus shuttle available every weekend and public holidays from 10 am to 12 noon at the town center next to Nakumatt Moi Avenue, you can also catch this bus at the Nairobi park main gate from 1 pm for an afternoon game drive at the Nairobi national park. There is also a six-seater land cruiser tour van available every day at the Nairobi park main gate that one can hire to do a game drive at their own convenient time and it comes with a driver and a guide!
